We left off the last episode talking about the first time that we, um, that I had to installing carpet and getting to work in the carpet industry. It was for ourselves. It was for my, um, my parents were there.

They were moving into a new home and they had carpets that need to be installed. I can imagine now that having kids of my own, that it probably was something my dad planned to do during the day, but I didn’t plan to go over there and install the carpet. It was a very small house. There was just a three bedrooms and a living room that had carpet in it. And so we just had to put the carpet into three bedrooms, connect it to what the little small five at hall and then connect that to the living room. And uh, I’m sure that he planned to just do that during the day, but he had to take the four or the five year old little boy with him because mommy was nine months pregnant and it wasn’t going to watch all of the kids. Well also, Carpet Cleaning Tulsa, you know, all by herself.

So I get to, I get to spend the day with that now. I liked it and this was, you know, this was a bonus. This is a, an extra special thing. You know, you’re at the age where anything you can do with your parents just seems awesome to go help them do stuff or work on stuff. And so I’ve, I specifically remember this because that night is when, um, uh, the first time I got to stay up all night long working and my dad, I’m sure on one side was planning to finish all of the carpet cleaning or carpet installation all during the day, but the, um, but the reality is that with a five year old tagging around, I probably slowed the whole process down. We’ve actually asked him all of the five-year-old questions. Carpet Cleaning Tulsa, so why does this pad needs to be this way? Why are we cutting it?

Why does it need to be stapled? Why does this go to the edges? How do these two pieces of carpet going to come together? Will there was carpet rip apart? Why is this carpet wrinkly? How we’re gonna make the carpet flat. How will we put it into this corner? We’ll go into the closet. Will it connect here? Why are these tax so pokey? Why is that knife so sharp? What does this hammer is supposed to be for? What did this spiky object with the bumper thing on it. I’m sure he just had this insane level of questions that I walked around wanting to micromanage and, and figure out every little part that he did and he was always gracious and will always take the time to explain to me what we’re doing, why we were doing and what purpose it had, um, for the whole installation process and I’m sure that he would, could have installed the carpet at during the day, but ended up having to go the entire night long so that we could install. I stayed up the entire night long installing that carpet probably because he got an inundated with an, a deluge of questions from his little four year old boy wanting to know how everything worked and how everything was going.

Carpet cleaning Tulsa since 1998. And having my own children now I can understand the importance also of taking the time to explain things to children so that they understand and can they wrap their brain around what is happening and why. And so one of the things that I got, obviously as a little four year old boy, I was not allowed to hold the carpet knife. There was way too sharp, would’ve cut my finger off, but I did get to use the staple gun, which, um, uh, to be able to tack the padding down or tape the padding down. Um, and then also remember one of the things I spent a good amount of time on doing was that at that time, the big roles of pad, they’re big. They’re six feet long. Um, but I would get up on top of it and instead of pushing the role of pat out, I would stand on top and try to barrel roll the padding out.

Now remember, this was something I did the entire night trying to get down to where I could do it. I get like one or two walks out and then I’d fall down as I get back up on. And then, uh, I believe by the end of the night and finally got to where I could move the pat about five or six feet while still staying on top of it. Where you kind of just stand out and you push it with your feet and kind of walk on the top of the roll as it started to unroll and so I try to unroll it and then try to roll it back up while just standing on top of it without falling off of the thing. It was a. It was a definitely a patience exercise I’m sure for my dad as he heard me roll a couple fall role, a couple of fall roll, a couple fall.

I went through the whole night long, but I remember that was the first time I saw a sunrise because I had been awake the whole night long. I was just really, you know, super excited that we’re getting to help my dad getting to spend the whole day installing carpet in my own house and have my own bedroom since I was the boy and I had two sisters. I got to have my own little mini bedroom. I got the smallest room in the house, but that was fine because I was the only one in it. While the, my two sisters got to share a room, they had the other room where they could enjoy their time together and it was separate from mine because we didn’t want to have the same areas because we had a little baby that just worked out perfect for me because I got the best night’s sleep when my sister had to have the perpetual crying in the evenings is all new babies are.

Um, and this grew up as I moved forward. I would always have times where I, you know, I never was. As I was young growing up, I always had the opportunity to go with my dad or sometimes you’d have people on a Saturday where I’m headed up, someone working for them. And so I would go and help them more that they gave me something to do. I was probably, they were probably getting me out of my dad’s hair so he could focus on other work. But I would, I liked it because I got to be friends with pretty much all the employees who work there. And then, you know, just gave me an opportunity to go and help in some way, earn a little extra money, some extra candy money or movie money or I remember one summer I spent the entire time just saving every single dollar for the whole year so I can buy a new bike.

Um, and so I’d go and do all of these extra little side jobs. I was always saving up because I wanted to have my idea. No, this was my dad’s business. And so I figured that I would need to come up with my own idea when I was got old enough. And so a carpet cleaning Tulsa since 1998. We’re talking about this stuff that we did before I ever started complete carpet and what we, the trail or the ideas that we went through. And one of the first things I tried, I think that every little boy has always tried is to start a lawn mowing company. It was a lawn care of Tulsa as very simple. Um, it was in the neighborhood next to where our house was, the House that we’d install, blow the carpet into. Um, and so I went over to that neighborhood, made up my little flyers, walked over to every single door and put a flyer in each door.

I think it was probably a couple hundred houses in there. And so I just walked down the street after street, after street, after one day of dropping out all the flyers. It was just, sure the next day the phone was gonna ring off the hook because this was back before you had cell phones back before we had pagers. And so I had to put in our own home phone, telephone number on the things I need to get all of those flyers up quickly. And I was just sure that I was missing phone calls that people were just going to be knocking down our door and flooding our, our voicemail box with, with calls saying, Oh yes, I am ready in needing of somebody who can mow our yard. And so I spent the whole day pushing out the flyer that ran home and I sat next to the phone for the entire evening and all of the next day and the day after and nobody called. And so it was my first introduction into business about how you need to advertise and then wait for the business to come.
