And I was talking about how, um, in that particular episode we, I’d gone through and worked hard to be able to generate the money that I needed to be able to build the first computer that I was really interested.
I knew how to do three d graphic, the garden, it was just through his rock and it just had all the stuff that I was really interested in. And um, and so I built it. I made it up perfectly and I had built the computer that I figured that anybody would love to have that good. It would just look at this and say yes, that’s it. Had even a CD rom drive in there, which I’m really, if it wasn’t for the game missed, Carpet Cleaning Tulsa, CD ROM drives would be completely nonexistent because Mr put in brought video games and brought all of the gaming side into the local homes. And to where you had a reason to have a cd rom drive before you could fit most games on a couple of floppy disk. You have this giant cd rom drive that had all of this memory storage capacity and it was completely wasted.
Goes, most games only needed one or two or three or five floppies at most and now you can have a cd rom drive that was worth like close to 100 floppies all in one the disc. So why would you need all that space? And uh, the game myst had all these really high end deep detailed graphics that would take up almost the entire disk with all these little mini movies and stuff in it. And so that game was one of the thing that put the CD rom drive on the map because now you had a surge of people who wanted to get cd Rom drives and have a reason to use them because they had this really lush, beautiful detailed graphics that were on all of these areas and all these discs. Well, at the time that I built this, I made one big giant fatal error.
We are complete carpet, carpet cleaning, Tulsa and surrounding communities since 1998. And I’m sure some of you have already spotted the fatal error that I had made in my planning to build a computer is that I built a computer that is super nerd Tech Geek like myself would want and the number of super nerd tech geeks out there who are willing to spend large amounts of money on high end gaming computers was extremely low. Pretty much all of the friends that I knew and then all the people are hanging out with already a built computers have similar fashion. Carpet Cleaning Tulsa so I could not find anyone that I knew that didn’t already have some type of Three d card and have some type of good gaming computer or they didn’t have the money, you know, they were high school students. They didn’t have, you know, 800 to a thousand dollars to spend on a computer.
And so there was no way for me to sell this particular computer so I could explain you to sell this one and I could build two more. And then it’s held those two and I can build for more. And I would just. Yeah, I thought it was going to snowball, but I realized that I had not first check to see whether there was a desire and interest in the market to buy these high end expensive a gaming computers in my particular neighborhood where I was at. There wasn’t a, an online ebay or a, a, um, you know, some big place that you could easily put up a whole bunch of stuff and sell it. You, Carpet Cleaning Tulsa if you wanted to sell a lot of them, you’d have to take out some big giant, expensive, a yellow page ad or you’d have to go onto the um, the PC MAC or pc cac magazines that actually have to invest a huge amount of money to have some graphic national ad.
And I, you know, I couldn’t get into that type of thing. I was just trying to do something small and build my way up. Carpet Cleaning Tulsa so I realized that I’d spent all the money on a great gaming pc that I was going to use and I would have to use because I’d spent all the money onto. There’s couldn’t find anyone interested in selling it. That really what people are interested in, they wanted a more basic computer that could just run, missed and could do pcb file or could do some simple accounting email. Something that would just run aol, some real basic computers is what people wanted. And so I had a real difficult time trying to find a way to sell these computers and so I had to go back and start on the drawing board again and realize I need to get back to where I need to make some money to generate, to build that next computer that I could sell.
And so I kept hitting my head against the wall and finally went back to the thing that should have been thinking about all along is I needed to do some thing that I had already become good at. That I’d spent my entire life really since I was about four or five years old doing carpet work and I’m dealing with people in the carpet industry. I had people that got to know me through my dad and for the fact that I went and picked up stuff for them was always, you know, it’s kind of the gopher. I’d go and get stuff done. I’ll be like, oh, I don’t really want to have to, but my dad was stuck and no one else could do it. So I’m like, Carpet Cleaning Tulsa all right, I’ll help out the business. I’ll run and get that thing. I’ll pick up some pastoral.
I’ll go do a little side job. When one of the guys were sick, I’d cover a schedule, but it was. I was more just kind of filling in that I really want to do. I wanted to find that thing that I go out and set my mark and be different and yet every time I tried to set my mark and be different, I ended up finding out that really I should be doing the thing that I’m good at. I’m not trying to go out there and discover some new thing to become great and good at. I already have a lot of connections and stuff right here, and so I thought I would tap in a little bit into that side of what it was. So I decided to go in and we started talking around to find out he didn’t want it to look good to take my dad’s business.
He already had a good solid business and plenty of people already working for them. But um, I wanted to find something I could do that will compliment what other people are already doing. And so I talked with everybody. I talked to my dad finding things. So what is it that you’re not doing right now and you know, what is it that you get asked to do, but you are just busy with other things and, and don’t, don’t get back around to it. And he said one of the things that get asked for all the time that he doesn’t do nobody on, nobody on staff does was a nobody installs carpet. So I said, oh, well if you get. Because I was in high schools my senior year in high school, Carpet Cleaning Tulsa I said I need to make some money, but it’s needed to have it be more flexible.
So I said, if you ever get calls for installation, instead of just turning them away or moving them over to somebody else, then just give me, uh, give them my number and tell him to call me and I will connect with them. Now this is early. This is when you’re finally getting into, I think it was voice stream was the early cell phones. And so this is where Mike, it was a pretty big investment. I mean if you wanted to have a cell phone, you’re going to have to, you don’t have to lay out at least a couple hundred bucks just to have like 50 minutes. And if you’re going to use it on a regular basis, like say you’re wanting to go to a thousand minutes, you’re going to blow through a huge chunk of change. And so I gave him my cell phone number and I realized quickly that to talk these deals through and, and to connect with these customers.
I’m going to have to spend a good chunk of phone time on the phone because for installation they want to know about, um, you know, the timeframes, get to get an estimate, you want to find out what the costs are, what are the different types of quotes that you can get done, um, what are the different installation prices, what types of places can be installed, what kinds of carpet or they’re going gonna make a difference and when they’re trying to make those decisions. Um, and so you come out there and you’d have to get it, you have to call them to be able to get a, it was before the big gps system so you have to call them and make sure you’ve got that good connection to where you’re going to go.
