But for the first part of this series on our history we are actually firing up a way way back machine and giving you history that predates the actual start of Complete Carpet. Continuing from our last episode we move past my humorous 2nd grade homeschool days and jump up to the teenage years. I grew up around carpet and the carpet service industry. My dad had been managing the carpet cleaning division of another local company and had branched out to start his own commercial business. Commercial cleaning, lots of apartment cleaning, almost no carpet installation but lots of carpet relaying from water damages. Plenty of restoration, from pets, water and sometimes smoke damage. I grew up always having the option to work for my dad, and I took advantage of that opportunity aggressively. But I always worked for him in service of my next idea. I would work for my dad’s company so that I could get enough money so I could try a new business. I tried many different small business adventures in my teens. Like possibly every single teenage boy in existence I spent my 12 and 13 year old summers running a yard company. Carpet cleaning Tulsa was not even a possible idea at this time. I was going to make it myself. So I worked for my dad to raise the capital to buy a lawn mower, weed eater, and paper. Off to Kinko’s to print lots and lots of neon green pages saying, Lawn Care of Tulsa call today. After a summer of working in the sun, getting covered in grass and leaves I had an ephiany. I did not want to work outside in the heat.

So the next summer, 1992 I’m looking for something new to do. Carpet cleaning Tulsa since 1998, for those of you at home doing the math this is 6 years before we started Complete Carpet. This year my little sister does the pageant circuit. I end up getting roped into filming her parts. The other parents ask could I film their girl also and next thing you know I’m filming the whole pageant. An official videography company covered the State finals. But no one did all the small local, city, area, regional, etc pageants. I’m excited this seems like a great opportunity. I get a TV and a 100 foot long coax cable so that I can video in the event but show the live feed outside of the event in the lobby. This helped sales because the mother’s realized that they really needed that video of their little girl. This was Little Miss Oklahoma, not Teen Miss Oklahoma. So all the girls were my little sisters age. I had it all planned out. I would record the whole event, roughly 8-10 hours. Then go home and use a VCR to record directly off my camera and find each girl that had paid for a copy and only record their parts. There were 3 parts to copy. All the girls had some pretty fluffy dress that they would walk out in. They all had the results part where all the girls came on stage. And they all had a talent that they would perform in between those two things. So I mentioned it’s 1992, and in March of that year Billy Ray Cyrus released Achy Breaky Heart. This song hadn’t factored into my planning. Record pageant, copy pageant, sell pageant. I hadn’t factored watching pageant over and over and over while copying each video I sold. That year almost every single girl did some kind of dance to Achy Breaky Heart as their talent. That song truly did break my heart that year as I was forced to listen to it endlessly as I replayed and copied every talent over and over. By the end of summer I had a new ephiany. I did not want to sit and watch the same thing over and over and over again for hundreds of hours straight.

Fast forward to 1997, very close now to 1998 when we started carpet cleaning Tulsa. I had put all my cool business ambitions on hold because I had put a laser like focus into basketball during high school. I had my own car and before my senior year I wanted to again try to make it on my own. So I took a newspaper ad to work for TruGreen Chemlawn as a cold call appointment setter. This was to build enough money to start a computer business called Comp Care. Month and a half of phone calling I had enough money to build a computer and quit. Once I had one computer built I then realized the problem with my current plan. I had used all my money for one computer and people didn’t want that computer I had built. There was no way I would go back and mindlessly call people again, because I had had another epiphany, I didn’t enjoy calling people and telling them the exact same thing 30 times an hour 8 hours a day. So it was time for something new.

Carpet cleaning Tulsa since 1998 we are Complete Carpet. In this series we are taking a wayback machine to visit the life and times of the world that was pre-Complete Carpet.
